Pick-up at the Pier

Pick-up at the Pier
23" x 29"
watercolor

I came upon this classic truck parked in an environment its designers and engineers surely envisioned it for: carefully maneuvered onto a sliver of wet deck on Provincetown's MacMillan Pier. The truck was an old model, quite beaten up, and yet somehow in perfect alignment with the Provincetown of today, where the past is always present and the ghosts are felt daily.

Salmagundi Member's Annual Exhibition + Awards Ceremony

I was elected to membership of New York City's historic Salmagundi Art Club in 2011.  Since then I've had the opportunity to show my work in many of their juried and non-juried exhibitions including the Members' Annual show this November. The closing reception was held on November 30th, and on that night I received the Elizabeth K. Ellis Artist Fellowship award for my Mason Jar Dahlias watercolor.  It was a fun time, and I was honored to be given the award amongst all of the high level works on display that night.

Becoming Barbara Bevan

Upon her retirement from teaching in 2000, Barbara Bevan told her students,"Don't ever lose your dreams; you'll get there." The time of her life depicted in this portrait came many years earlier when Barbara was on the verge of a big change. It was 1978, and at 37 years old she was the divorced mother of two young boys. By this time she had met a new man and was engaged to be married for the second time. It was late afternoon in Florida, she and her fiance were on their way to meet his parents for the first time. En route he stopped her to pose in front of a hibiscus tree. The light, and Barbara, to beautiful to pass up.

A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by Smithsonian Magazine for an article about the Provincetown Dune Shacks. You can read the article here. I was happy to contribute a quote about one of my favorite places in the world.

Feeling the Heat / Herring Cove Bathhouse

Feeling the Heat / Herring Cove Bath House
Watercolor
12"x16"

Purchase and inquiries can be made through Lyman-Eyer Gallery, Provincetown, MA

A note on this painting:

The Herring Cove Beach bathhouse depicted in this painting doesn't have long for this world. Plans for a new facility have been designed and approved and construction is set to begin this fall. I find myself frequently drawn to mid-century architecture and in particular, beach architecture. In 2004, I painted the bathhouse at Horseneck Beach in Westport, MA, shortly before that too was torn down in favor of a newer, more efficient facility. I am happy to document and provide record of the existence of these structures. They are memorable for their design, indicative of a very different time than the one we live in today, but also for the stark contrast in scenery they provide, their man-made geometry bold against the minimal ocean backdrop.

Baseball Commission

Baseball Study 4"x 4"

Commissions make up a significant portion of my studio time. I'm happy to take on these jobs as they often require me to consider subject matter I might not otherwise. If you have an idea or a question about a piece you'd like commissioned, please contact me through email: Michael@MichaelLyonsStudio.com or by phone: (201) 213 2291.
