Watercolor Magazine: 25 Artists To Watch

Watercolor Magazine just published its 25th Anniversary Issue, and to celebrate this milestone, the fall issue includes a "25 Artists to Watch" feature. I was very honored to be included in this and to offer some of my thoughts about water media and my artistic process. You can find Watercolor Magazine in the Art section of Barnes & Noble's periodicals and elsewhere.

Ocean State of Mind

In the time since my last update I've experienced a swift change in scenery. In July, I left my job and home in Manhattan to partake in a year long painting excursion with a shift of my home base to Providence, Rhode Island.

While I don't intend to paint scenic New England exclusively, it can be hard to resist. Here then are two recent paintings of my all time favorite spot in the Ocean State, Beavertail Lighthouse, located within the beautiful island setting of Jamestown, RI. Standing heroically at the top of it's jagged coastline since 1856, amidst the keeper's house, its light shines 24 hours a day.

Dream Car

This Mustang is not my dream car in the figurative sense (that would be a 1961 E Type Jaguar/Batmobile/Wagoneer hybrid), but more literally it is the car of my dreams: When I came upon it in this setting a familiarity came over me. There was that undeniable sense of deja vu, or maybe more simply, it was just a dream.

Yellow Skies

Despite having been in Manhattan for 5 years now, the city scape has infrequently appeared as visual inspiration for many finished pieces. I prefer more sparseness in my subject matter.

This little cityscape presents the view from the hallway of my 16th floor apartment in a city that has everything to offer except sparseness. It was made to serve the same purpose of a snapshot; I wanted something to remember.

Blood Orange Season

Happy New Year

This period of quiet weeks has never been a favorite time of year for me, but thankfully inspiration comes in strange forms. My favorite fruit, the blood orange, with its visceral blast of tart flavor and color in an otherwise grey January, always raises my spirits. Particularly when mixed with spirits (see margarita recipe below).

Blood Oranges are a mutation of the sweet orange. They are in season from January-April/May and their many types yield a range of colors (that I've attempted to document) and a varying degree of tartness.

Blood Orange Margarita
(yields 4 drinks)

1/2 cup blood orange juice
juice of 1 lime
1 cup orange liquor (triple sec or grand marnier)
ice
1 cup white tequila

Combine all ingredients (except ice) in a measuring cup or pitcher.
Fill a cocktail shaker 3/4 full with ice. Add blood orange mixture.
Shake for a full 30 seconds and pour into salt rimmed glasses.

Maybe winter isn't so bad.

Recent Commission

Here are two large scale watercolors (each are about 4' long) I painted for a client. She commissioned me to create a piece to go in a specific space in her North Carolina home. The client provided me with a few personal snapshots of the Blue Ridge Mountains which I used as a point of inspiration.

I ended up creating two distinctly different paintings for her to choose from. She was thrilled by both versions, but ended up choosing the deep blue/grey palette.
